Myanmar releases some 7,000 prisoners for second time this month

SANAA, April 26 (Saba) – Myanmar began releasing prisoners after the president announced he would pardon about 7,000 people, as well as thousands more who were released earlier this month.

The Myanmar President issued an unconditional amnesty for 6,948 prisoners “for the happiness of the people of Myanmar, taking into account humanitarian considerations”.

Authorities released more than 9,000 prisoners on April 17 on the first day of the New Year in Myanmar, but human rights activists were disappointed that the previous amnesty included only two people convicted on political charges.
